Mendeley from upstream site works fine in ROSA, I have been using it for years. So just download tarball from the site, unpack it to some folder (e.g. to some place in your home directory to avoid necessity for root permissions) - let's say /home/foo. And launch mendeley by typing .

You can also use install-mendeley-link-handler.sh script to install .desktop file script to install .desktop file:
Mendeley will track updates by itself and install new versions automatically (surely, after you confirm this).
