Now that RP1 is released, can we update the original installation of marathon 2012, rather than downloading this whole pack once again and burn DVD like in the original and reinstall from the start?

RP1 is just a fresh 2012LTS image, featuring all fixes and updates since May. If you are already running Marathon and installed all available updates, then your system is identical to RP1. You don't need to reinstall it or search for any extra updates.
